The Journey of Divorce: Why Community Matters

By: Laura Sayers Bytwerk

Divorce is one of life’s most difficult transitions. It can leave you feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and questioning your identity and future. While the world may tell you to “be strong” and “do it on your own,” the truth is that healing and rebuilding are never meant to happen in isolation. Success on your own is not only harder—it’s slower and lonelier.

One of the most powerful steps you can take during and after divorce is to surround yourself with community. Supportive friends, wise mentors, and those who have walked this path before you can offer emotional strength, practical tips, and reassurance that you are not alone. Learning from others who have navigated custody battles, financial rebuilding, or rediscovering their purpose and life this side of divorce can provide clarity and direction at a time when everything feels uncertain.

But community isn’t just about getting help—it’s also about rebuilding. Divorce is an ending, yes, but it’s also a beginning. Are you building the life you want when your divorce journey is over? This is YOUR time to design the life you want moving forward. What does joy look like now? What kind of relationships do you want to cultivate? Where do you want to grow? Where do you want to be in 2, 3 or 5 years? Community can reflect your worth back to you when you're struggling to see it for yourself, and they can cheer you on as you take each brave new step. Others have found precious community in friends and mentors made through The Oaks Organization.

Most importantly, don’t forget to lean into what God says about you. In the pain and confusion, it’s easy to believe lies about your value or your future.

But God calls you loved, chosen, redeemed, and worthy. His plans for you haven’t changed, even if your relationship status has. Instead of married and loved, you are divorced and loved. Instead of married and redeemed, you are divorced and redeemed. God's view of you or the way He cares and loves you...hasn't changed and it NEVER will. Lean on His truth as the foundation of your healing, and trust that He is not finished writing your story.

If you are feeling alone and unsure where to go or what to do next, reach out to The Oaks Organization to find a friend, a hug, and a community—don't go it alone, we're here for you.

Blessings!

Laura
